Stop Fear in It's Tracks
Learn to Speak Fearlessly
Do you dry up when it’s time to speak up?
As a child I was painfully shy and I know only too well how shyness and the fears that go with it can negatively impact a life.
Our mind can be our greatest enemy but it can also be our best friend. We all have a need and a desire to communicate with others but speaking in front of other people, no matter how large or small the audience, is one of the activities that most terrifies us as human beings. Our response can range from mild anxiety to utter panic.
We may start to use avoidance techniques and, little by little, we reduce our worlds to a small zone of comfort. Our reluctance to step outside this zone is fuelled by the physical symptoms - the nausea, the shaking and the racing heart, to name but a few. Sometimes these symptoms get so bad that we feel we are going to die. The fear can be all consuming and incapacitating, causing us to fail to reach our full potential and preventing us from contributing to our families, our communities and our world.
Does any of this sound familiar? Some degree of anxiety is normal and the vast majority of people suffer from a fear of speaking in public at some point in our lives. The important thing is to recognise when this fear is getting out of control. When the situation starts to overwhelm you, it is time to make a decision to change. We can bring about change by learning the facts and finding the best solutions.
With some knowledge and a willingness to work on yourself to make changes, your world can be vastly different. This course will examine fears and help you to track down any that you may have in your own life. It will also give you tried and tested tools that will strengthen your mind and make you the person you are destined to be.
- Kinds of fear: fear of criticism, fear of embarrassment, fear of ridicule, fear of rejection, fear of uncertainty, fear of losing control, fear of imperfection, fear of failure, fear of success
- Situations that can be fearful: a date, an audition, a wedding speech, a meeting, an interview, a presentation, a lecture, a telephone call, asking for a favour
- Strategies and activities to help you to discover more about yourself
- A techniques toolbox to dip into when you need to speak in front of others
This is a 10-lesson, text-based course for those who already know something about fear and their own relationship with it.
It was previously published as “Speak with Confidence” and available on Daily OM.
The course consists of 10 lessons, each with real-life examples, and examines in more depth the different kinds of fears than can creep into our lives.
Each lesson should take approximately 1h to complete and there are lots of activities to experiment with and things to reflect on. The activities are central to the course. Taking action against fear is the key.
